6 Simple Writing Tips for Getting Inspired

Updated: Mar 18, 2023

Inspire Your Writing Creativity

For writers, inspiration can be hard to come by. We're always looking for ways to get the creative spark ignited. When you're trying to get the flow of words to start it's important to find ways to get your mind in the right place so that your creativity can emerge.

Creativity is elusive and often fickle. Sometimes, it appears at a moment's notice needing an immediate outlet; other times, it evades you at every turn. While there is no magic formula to guarantee that the flow of ideas will strike when you need it most, there are a few ways to initiate those sparks into a flame that will get the bonfire of ideas alight.

1. Listen to inspirational music

Listening to inspirational music can be a great way to get into the right frame of mind for writing. Music can help you tap into your creativity, connect with your emotions, and give you the energy and motivation to keep working. It's a great way to set the mood for exploring something new, and it can help you out of a creative rut. Certain music stimulates those creative juices and gets them to flow.

If you're struggling with just getting started, writer's block, or just need some inspiration for a new project, try listening to some songs that set the mood for what it is that you're trying to accomplish.

Choose classical music, adventure music, or whatever suites your fancy to transport you into the realm of your mind where the fire begins to ignite.

2. Take a walk outside.

The fresh air and beautiful scenery will surely inspire you. Take a device or notebook. Let nature calm and inspire you at the same time. Being in nature can truly be inspirational. Start to take in the scenery and notice the world around you. Let the beauty of your environment, the interaction of people and animal's and overall surroundings help relax and transport your mind into a more open and adventurous state.

If you're needing to initiate the flow of ideas or just feeling stuck, take a walk and observe your surroundings, the beauty of nature and interactions of people and animals can be both calming and inspiring. This can be as simple as taking a small stroll around the block or going for a hike in the woods. Fresh air and a change of scenery are great for clearing your head and allowing ideas to flow freely.

3. Play with words sounds or phrases and let creativity come naturally

The more you write, the better it gets. There's no way around that fact. So if you're just starting out and don't feel like your writing is as good as it could be, don't worry about it.

Play with words, sounds, or phrases and let creativity come naturally. Create a rough outline.

If you find yourself struggling with inspiration, try these tips:

  • Play with words sounds or phrases. This can help break through writer's block by getting your mind working again. You could also try writing different versions of one sentence until one sounds better than another. If you're jotting down notes write more than one version. Explore exactly what you want to say in various ways

  • Let your mind wander - let yourself go wherever it takes you by closing your eyes and doing nothing but listening to inspirational music throughout the day. Then write freely of what comes to mind. This will help stimulate those creative sparks. Delve into your imaginative capabilities.

  • Jot down any ideas as notes. Rereading your notes could help you find inspiration to get started. Sometimes what we want to say is there and seeing the beginning pieces helps us to decide better what to write. Even if your notes feel disorganized and not connected you can later go back over them and form an outline.

4. Clear your mind. Let go of expectations and don't worry about mistakes

This is one of my favorites because it helps me calm my mind and focus on what I want to create or need to accomplish. Get your mind clear of distractions and focus on the task at hand. Your first draft should be a spontaneous eruption of thought. You can always edit it later.

  • Clear your mind. Let go of preconceived expectations and don't worry about mistakes.

  • Focus on the process, not the product.

  • Don't worry about what other people think. If you do, it will only be a distraction from writing in the first place.

  • Don't worry about the outcome-whether it's good or bad or something else altogether doesn't matter as long as it helps you grow as a writer and person.

  • Don't inhibit the ideas as they come and don't worry about punctuation. Editing can be done at later time. Right now just record the things that you want and need to say. Don't interrupt the flow of ideas.

5. Clean your space

Clutter can make you feel stagnant and unproductive. Clearing clutter can give you a fresh perspective that will help you think up new ideas and approaches. Bring order to any disorganization. Give yourself an environment that doesn't distract.

Cleaning your space can help you feel more creative. When your environment is clean and clutter-free, it's easier to get work done. It becomes much easier to begin writing when you're not staring at things needing to be done.

The same goes for other parts of your life, a well organized environment can help with focus too. If you're having trouble focusing on a project or just feeling overwhelmed with tasks at hand, try cleaning something that needs attention (like tidying your writing space). This will help to clear away any distractions and allow you to focus on one thing at a time as you make progress toward completing the task at hand.

6. Read a book, blog, or article for inspiration

Reading a book is a great way to get inspired. It can help you think about your topic from a different perspective, and it gives you the opportunity to learn new things. If there's a particular author or type of writing that interests you, try reading their work for inspiration. Sometimes we can become inspired by reading a similar subject and then start to generate our own ideas for what we want to write for ourselves.

Read a book, blogs, or articles that give educational information about your topic.

If there's anything specific about your topic that interests you. Then look up books, blogs, even poetry with similar themes. Break through the ice by acquiring knowledge. It can stimulate you as well. Reading these sorts of works will give you more understanding into the context surrounding your topic and give you ideas for how you can approach your own writing.

There's no one way

As you can see, there are many different ways to get your writing sparks ablaze. The most important thing is to find what works best for you and stick with it. If one method isn't working as well anymore, try something new until you find something that does work. Use your individual tastes to relax and choose the method(s) that works best for you. Remember: don't be afraid of making mistakes. Let the words flow smoothly and naturally.
